Sorrel and his family lived on the outskirts of the Telepath Colony closer to the ocean than the main colony; as they packed the items they would need to get them to the Elders Council, Toz kept a wary eye on his younger brother. Rohyr informed his wife of what had happened and they said a brief goodbye and they set off towards the edge of their land. Sorrel cast his mind out as far as he could and tried to sense anyone in the area; all his mind touched were animals, he felt some of them recoil at his touch. Rohyr and Toz strode ahead leaving Sorrel running to catch up with them.
“Papa?” he said tugging on Rohyr’s long sleeve. Looking down at his son he answered softly;
“Yes, Sorrel?”
“What will happen when we see the Elders?”
“Well, they’ll do a few tests to see if you are an Elemental and then you might be sent to the Dragon Centre.”
“Will I have to go on my own?” He asked nervously, “not that I’m scared” he added quickly with a glance to his older brother.
“Yes, you will have to go alone, but there will be apprentices your age there too. They will probably be training to become Dragon Masters.” Rohyr answered with a smile. They walked along in silence for a while before Sorrel’s little voice popped up again.
“What does a Dragon Master do? How do they teach them how to do it? How do they pick who goes there?” Toz and Rohyr exchanged a look and sighed. It was going to be a long walk.
When they finally arrived at the main colony they bought some food which they shared between them; Sorrel bit deeply into the Zicks seed, yellow juice dribbled down his chin as he savoured the orange flesh of the fruit.
“I love Zicks” he said through a mouthful of fruit.
“Don’t talk with your mouthful,” his brother replied wiping his mouth on his sleeve.
“Don’t wipe your mouth on your clothes,” he responded with a smirk.
“Boys.” Said Rohyr forcefully.
“Sorry, Papa,” they responded in unison. They headed towards the Elder Council which was central to the colony; the building was bright white unlike the rest of the colony. Sorrel walked through holding Papa’s hand while Toz waited outside; they were greeted by a boy younger than Sorrel. He led them through to the Elders and introduced them; Rohyr explained the reason they had come before them and they agreed to test Sorrel.
He was offered the bowl of water which shifted towards him and the pebble flew straight to his hand, much to his shock and amusement. He did not have the skill to light the candle, but once it was lit the flame bent towards his hand and rolled between his fingers.
“We will contact the Dragon Masters and send word to you,” one of the Elders said. Sorrel and Gurro left and met with Toz outside.
“So what happened?” Toz said as they left the building.
“Fire went on my fingers!” Sorrel said excitedly. Toz looked up at his father who explained in more detail.
“He passed the test; they’re going to contact us when they hear back from the Dragon Masters. Come we must get home before dark,” he said as he looked up towards the sky where the sun was beginning to set.
Mycah was laying on the grass with Sorrel and Dio, the three dragons were chasing Zion’s as they flitted here and there; they were not likely to catch one, but it made them laugh to see them running around still very ungainly. Raffy leant back on his hind legs using his thick tail to support him and flapped his long wings multiple times as he lifted his head high in the air. Without warning Red pounced on him flattening him to the floor, they wrestled for a while the air filling with growls and tiny rumbles which begun in their chests followed by the snap of jaws as they tried to bite each other. Loki jumped into the air and landed on the both of them and they rolled around the grass fighting sounding like angry puppies. Mycah, Sorrel and Dio were watching them intently, laughing at the pathetic noises they made; the sun sent rainbows skittering across the grass from their scales. The sun made the hidden colours in their scales far more obvious, the dark purples and blues shimmered over Loki. Gold and silver flecks sprinkled across Red’s back and face. When the light caught Raffy’s scales, rainbows bounced along him from tip of his snout to the end of his tail. They were beginning to get spikes growing over the top of their heads and down their spines across their tails; they were small little lumps now, but soon they would get bigger. The dragons had already grown from the size of a cat to their shoulders reaching the Dragon Master’s knees. Raffy ran towards Mycah and landed on the middle of her stomach pushing the air out of her lungs and making her cough and splutter.
“Raffy!” she gasped as Sorrel and Dio laughed hysterically until Red and Loki did the same to them.
“Time to train in the Dojo,” Chenyo’s voiced echoed through their head. They hauled themselves to their feet and started towards the Dojo. Mycah shifted into her wolf and trotted away a few steps before she stopped and waited for Raffy who jumped onto her back and tried to balance himself as she walked before finally giving up half way to the Dojo and he slid off and walked beside her. Red and Loki walked too which meant it took a lot longer to get to the Dojo than it would normally. When they finally entered they found it empty except for Chenyo who was sitting in the middle of the floor with his legs crossed as he waited.
“Ah, you are here,” he said as he stood. “Today we are going to train with your dragons. Although they cannot fly yet you have to work on building bonds between you most importantly you have to be able to work as a team against anything. You are used to fighting alone, but now not only must you work as a three but as a six.” He looked at each of them in turn, before looking at the three dragons who were sprawled on the floor not paying attention to Chenyo at all. He whistled loudly and watched all three of them jump and look around for the noise. “You need to pay attention, little ones. We won’t be long,” he said with a smile. Mycah bent down to right Raffy who was lying on this back and watched as Sorrel and Dio did the same; they all squirmed but stayed upright while Chenyo was talking.
“Connect your minds with your dragon and see through their eyes.” He watched as they all frowned in concentration. Mycah touched Raffy’s mind gently and met his eyes;
“Can I see through your eyes?” She asked him.
“Yes,” his voice replied, deeper than it had been. She murmured a quick word as Raffy made a whirring noise in his throat; her vision blurred before she saw through his eyes. Everything was tinted an off white colour like she was looking through fog; she frowned as he shook his head.
“Oh, don’t do that Raffy, you’re going to make me sick!” He twisted his head from left to right and bounced across the Dojo floor towards Chenyo; stopping he turned to look at Red and Loki who were walking around as well while Sorrel and Dio stood looking confused. Creeping up behind Red, he crouched and pounced on her which made her and Sorrel yelp in surprise; as he couldn’t see when Sorrel jumped he tripped and fell over jolting him back into his own body. Mycah burst out laughing as she pulled her mind out of Raffy’s; he laughed in his own way with a strange chirruping sound that rolled across his tongue.
